101 Things I Have Learned Since Becoming an SEO Copywriter

I’ve been an SEO copywriter for four and a half months now and in that time I have written in excess of one hundred and seventy articles for clients in pursuit of back links.

That is approximately a novel’s worth of content written in 500-800 word chapters.

I have not once scraped for content, which is to say copied another article wholesale from an article site and simply spun it. I have instead relied on online research, common sense, well used tropes, and client suggestions.

So many articles. So many sites. So much random data out there. This is why SEO copywriters are potentially insufferable dinner party guests.

A random sampling of the things I’ve learned which I might never have learned otherwise:

Panda Recovery and SEO Best Practices

Search Engine Watch ran a story today (I have it posted in on my Articles page for those who are interested) about websites which took a major hit due to Google’s Panda update but which have since started to see a recovery due to sound SEO practices. I am reminded about my former career in book retail. Before moving out west and finding my way into the world of SEO I worked for Chapters (later Indigo) for thirteen years. I can still remember the shock waves when (a few years before I started working for the company) Chapters stepped onto the Canadian book landscape. The doom-saying and bellyaching from the small independent booksellers was ubiquitous. It was, we were led to believe, the end of the world of books as we knew it.

Well the truth is, it is 2011 and there are still independent booksellers out there. In fact, though there are admittedly fewer independents now, the independent booksellers of today are savvier, more focussed and competitive than many of their predecessors. There are more books being sold to more Canadians (and more CANADIAN BOOKS I might add) than ever before.

Things evolve. The results of evolution are almost always lean towards leaner stronger and healthier.

Panda was a means towards the those ends which Google has consistently preached. Namely, a faster, less spammy, more relevant internet search experience. Those companies mentioned in the SEW article have started affecting recovery through SEO best practices long held to be sound (and by distancing themselves from practices long held to be poor).

I suppose the question is, why did it take a huge hit in traffic to start adopting those practices?

For the record I shop exclusively from independent booksellers nowadays.

Corny SEO Joke

An SEO copywriter walks into a bar. The bartender looks at him and says, “Weren’t you in here less than an hour ago?

The SEO copywriter sits down at the bar and hunches forward. “No,” he mutters under his breath, “musta been someone else.

The bartender squints at him as he polishes a glass. “I’m sure I’ve seen you today. You sure as hell look familiar. You were dressed differently or something.

The SEO copywriter says, “Yeah, I uh… get that alot.

The bartender is not convinced. “Uh huh,” he says, “so what’ll it be, then?

The SEO copywriter looks up at him and says, “A Guiness, same as before.

Learning SEO, even a little SEO can make a big difference.

I hesitate to post this article only because as beginner material goes it is a little advanced. The reason why I have decided to post it anyway is to illustrate an important point that is well worth illustrating.

SEO is not all voodoo and dirty tricks designed to fool the search engines.  It’s not all a matter of staying one step ahead of the programmers at Google. Sometimes it is a simple matter of knowing the best way to do things.

It’s said that there is more than one way to skin a cat, and while I haven’t ever tried to test this theory (I quite like cats) I think everyone understands what it means. Some ends can be met through any number of different means. This is certainly the case with web design these days.

The truth is you can have two websites which look almost identical to the human eye and yet one might be all but invisible to the search engines (and therefore just about impossible for anyone to find) while the other ranks well and and comes up associated with a dozen of the most obvious keywords. The difference? Small behind the scenes choices on the site. We’re not talking about vast social bookmarking campaigns or weird elaborate link scams or article farms.

What I am saying is that learning SEO, even a very basic knowledge of on-page search engine optimization can make a world of difference. Here’s the article:

How I got a 300% retail explosion… (searchengineland 2011/03/03)

“I’ve lived by this rule since 1997: If you name your products using the keywords customers search for to find and buy what you sell, you’ll do better selling online than if you use the manufacturer’s name or industry jargon for your product names.”

What is SEO?

It is apparently easy to lose track of what SEO is meant to accomplish. Even some thoroughly web savvy clients sometime seem a little fuzzy on what precisely they are hiring our firm to do.

What is SEO?

The goal of SEO or Search Engine Optimization is to affect changes to your website which will result in your website ranking higher on the major search engines for targeted keyword searches. Some of these changes are simple onpage changes while others are more involved offpage strategies.

I don’t know how many times (in just six weeks) I have heard clients raise variations of the same question: How is what you’re doing going to drive traffic to my site?

The answer of course is that it’s not. It (whatever it may be) is not actually intended to drive traffic to the site. SEO is intended to optimize your site so that it ranks better on the search engines. Period.

A lot of work can go into a comprehensive SEO campaign. It is a process and it can be a fairly slow and involved process at that. Each change successfully implemented will incrementally increase your search rankings. None of these changes are actually designed to drive traffic to your site, though some of them might do so as an added bonus.

The end result of a successful SEO campaign is a better ranking on Google (and Yahoo, MSN, AOL etc) and THAT is what will drive traffic to your site.

Think about your own search habits. When was the last time you clicked on a search result from page four or five? For that matter when the last time you clicked on the last result on page one?

There is a reason why advertisers pay good money to appear on page one and a reason why companies spend good money to ensure their websites are optimized for the search engines. The real action takes place at the top of page one. That’s where the main course has traditionally been served. Those seated at the bottom of page one or beyond must be content with table scraps.

In conclusion, if you want to do something right away that will drive traffic to your site, try advertising. If you want to ensure that in the long run your site will be attracting more customers than your competition, go with SEO.

Or, hell, do both.
